ABOUT THE TAROT
One of the most ancient studies of enlightenment and discovery of the authentic "Self”, Tarot images– linked to ancient beliefs, mythologies, and religious systems– form the seeds of fundamental psychological and spiritual experiences. Often associated with magic and the occult, the deck is the precursor to our well known playing cards.

ABOUT THE SHOW
Originally created and performed in 2007, ‘The Living Tarot’ was the fourth interactive production of IONA’s diverse Salon Series which offered audiences a once in a lifetime provocative interpretation of eleven of the Major Arcana Tarot cards. The show took place in a century-old house located on Oahu's Pali Highway (dubbed, 'The House of the Living Tarot'), in which the living installations became personal encounters as audience-members roamed from room to room to experience the cards they were dealt as they walked in the door. The audience experienced each of the 5-minute tarot card performances in their own unique order. The dancers performed their pieces ten times each evening - a total of 60 times through the run of the show.

ABOUT THE HOUSE
IONA Artistic Director, Cheryl Flaharty, had her eye on the disheveled vacant house on Nuuanu’s Pali Drive for over two years before she approached owner Mike Irish (after drawing a tarot card for good luck). He was considering tearing it down after having it on the market for so long and generously allowed IONA to take it over, chain saw and all, for their 2007 production of ‘The Living Tarot’.

Flaharty immediately invited Dack – a good friend with a flair for interior design and an appetite for creating just about anything– to accompany her in the endeavor. Their first tour of the inside of the house was inspiring and daunting. It had not been occupied since a group of Catholic Priests lived there several years back. With six bedrooms upstairs and a large living room, kitchen, dining room, and lanai downstairs, it was clear that this house was destined to become “The House of the Living Tarot”.

Six weeks and 20 devout volunteers later, the show opened and was a huge success. IONA would like to thank Dack, Brian, Mike, Mo, Karen, all our fabulous volunteers, and of course, the Dancers, who helped to turn an idea into a reality.
