IONA has developed audiences for dance through their numerous collaborations including the Hawaii Opera Theatre in 'Macbeth' and 'The Tales of Hoffman'. Artistic Director Cheryl Flaharty’s interest in mixed media has brought the Company to work with many diverse artists on IONA productions. Of note is playwright Victorial Nalani Kneubuhl who has written passionate and humorous scripts for ‘Hawaiian Myths’ & Legends, ‘Destiny’, ‘The Living Tarot’ and ‘Electric Blue’. Kneubuhl’s treatment of Kamapua’a (the Hawaiian Pig God) in “You’re the One for Me’ is an example of her keen work that has contributed to the success of many pieces in the Company’s repertoire. Other notable collaborations include Jazz Fusion Band The Quadraphonix, composer John Senior, and the late Sergio Goes in both still photography and video for staged productions.
IONA's focus on meeting the demands of the local and visitor populations has resulted in a significant contribution to the burgeoning Hawai'i Culture and Arts scene. As a result of their efforts IONA was chosen by the State of Hawaii to perform at the International Cultural Summit in May of 2006, Honolulu's Centennial Commission's 150th Anniversary gala in August of 2006, and by the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism to perform in Shanghai, China in 2004 with other notable Hawaiian performers for the "Hawaii Experience".
